Speaking of gin, England, the Netherlands and Germany are famous, but recently distilleries in various countries are all making gin.
Japanese gin is famous for "Roku gin" "Kinobi" "Wabijin" , but Suntory newly released "Sui" a while ago.
Rokujin and Kinobi are about 4000 yen, while Sui is about 1400 yen, which is reasonably priced and easy to get.
Today, I'm gonna introduce the features and tastes of "Sui" released on March 10, 2020.
What is Sui?
In addition to traditional gin botanicals (juniper berries, coriander etc...), this gin uses three types of Japanese ingredients (Yuzu, Green tea, Ginger).
It is made to fit your daily meals and is reasonably priced in the one- to two-thousand yen range.
11 kinds of botanicals
- Juniper berry
- Angelica route
- Coriander seed
- Angelica seed
- Cardamon seed
- Cinnamon
- Bitter orange peel
- Lemon peel
- Citron
- Green tea
- Ginger
Recommended way to drink Sui
There are recommended ways to drink that Suntory has posted on its official website.
Gin and tonic is the standard cocktail of gin, but the recommended way to drink this "Sui" is gin and Club soda.
Gin Soda
Gin soda is made of club soda 4 to gin 1 ratio.
As a sake that goes well with meals, it has a refreshing taste.
I actually made it and drank it, but it was a perfect companion to the meal because it had a refreshing taste that did not interfere with the taste of the meal.
Review
I tried drinking Sui in various ways.
Straight
When I drank it, it was a little sweet and easy to drink.
You can feel the unique flavor of Japanese botanicals such as yuzu, which is completely different from British gin such as Beefeater and Gordon.
Sui Gimlet
Recipe
- 1.7oz Sui
- 0.4oz Lime juice
- 1-1/2tsp Sugar syrup
Shake all ingredients and pour into a cocktail glass.
I made a typical gin cocktail "Ginmelt" using a Sui.
The sourness of lime juice is delicious and it has a refreshing taste.
Sui White lady
Recipe
- 1oz Sui
- 1/2oz Cointreau
- 1/2 Lemon juice
Shake all ingredients and pour into a cocktail glass.
Next, I made "White Lady", a famous short cocktail of gin.
I didn't know if the Japanese flavor of Sui would match Cointreau and lemon, but it was a surprising match and the cocktail was delicious.
Summary
This time, I introduced the Japanese gin "Sui”.
It is a low-priced gin, but it was a delicious gin as it was or as a cocktail.
In Japan, there are gin that are a little more expensive, such as Rokujin and Kinobi, but since they are Japanese gin, their flavors are a little similar.
As a drink for everyday use, it is highly recommended because it has a delicious taste at a reasonable price.
Please give it a try.
